BODY, SOUL, AND SPIRIT
Our Threefold Nature
Dr. Clarence Larkin uses three circles to illustrate the threefold nature of a human being. The outer circle stands for the body, the middle circle for the soul, and the inner circle for the spirit.
Dr. Clarence Larkin’s Three Circles
In the outer circle, the 'BODY' is shown interacting with the physical world through the five senses of 'sight,' 'smell,' 'hearing,' 'taste' and 'touch.'
The gates to the 'SOUL' are 'imagination,' 'conscience,' 'memory,' 'reason,' and 'affections.'
The 'SPIRIT' receives impressions of outward and material things through the soul. The spiritual faculties of the 'Spirit' are 'faith,' 'hope,' 'reverence,' 'prayer,' and 'worship.'
Consistent and continuous practice in cultivating and developing these spiritual faculties, as well as, submitting your will to the Spirit's guidance would produce love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These virtues constitute the inner resources required to meet the crushing demands of human life and allow one to relate, thrive and live abundantly.
